Hooks and barbs.

Post by Clive Bates 2274 » Fri May 31, 2019 4:36 pm

Hi all, I've got a small selection of lures at the moment. They all have barbed hooks. Is it possible to buy lures with hooks/trebles that don't have barbs? I've been told that I could flatten the barbs on my existing hooks. I tried it but the barb just snapped off leaving a jagged bump. I'm new to Pike fishing so any advice would be appreciated.

Tight lines, Clive.

You could get a decent nail file (diamond, not an emery board) and file off the worst of the hump, then follow up with a sharpening stone to get a good point. Don't rub backwards and forwards, just go in one direction. Hold the hook in forceps against a solid surface or you'll just make things worse. Take your time, try it, and you'll master it. Don't use a coarse file, it will just jag the steel.
Hope that helps

Thanks David. Sounds like a good plan to me. Yes it definitely helps. I've got all the necessary stuff to do the job. Think I'll have an afternoon in my garage later this week and do them all.
